Abstract

Background. The present study is devoted to the problem of discursive means used to construct the image of judicial power in Russian and English print media. The current research is considered to be a worthwhile study because of negative public opinion about judicial power in Russia. Judicial power in Great Britain is of-ten criticized for being too lenient. The purpose of the study is to analyze linguistic means employed within the strategy of emotionalisation.
Materials and methods. The data come from the following sources: a governmental paper, “Rossijskaja Gazeta”, an oppositional paper, “Novaja Gazeta”, the broadsheet, “The Guardian” and the tabloid, “The Daily Mail”. The study relies on methods offered by the school of Critical Discourse Analysis.
Results. The author examines the strategy of emotionalisation that is employed to represent the judiciary. Within the determined strategy the analysis of linguistic means of its realization is performed. The author investigates lexical and grammatical language means as well as stylistic devices that realize the emotionalisation strategy in Russian and English print media. The study also examines the agent expressing emotions in mass media discourse about the judiciary. Furthermore, different types of representing emotions are discussed. Besides, cultural differences typical of employing the emotionalisation strategy in Russian and English print media are revealed.
Conclusions. The author makes a conclusion about the image of the judiciary constructed in Russian and British media by means of the emotionalisation strategy. It allows the journalist to create both positive and negative image of judicial power. The article promotes deeper understanding of mass media discursive mechanisms that impact public opinion about the judiciary.
